Senate Reopens Debate on South-South Development Commission BillThe Nigerian Senate revisited the long-suspended bill to establish the South-South Development Commission on Thursday, during the plenary session.

Following a heated debate, the bill successfully passed its second reading, signaling a potential shift in developmental priorities for the country.

The bill, if passed, would create a new commission focused on driving development in the South-South region, a departure from the current resource-focused model of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

During the session, South-South lawmakers passionately argued for the merits of the commission, emphasizing the need for region-specific development initiatives.

Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, and a lawmaker from Kogi State advocated for the inclusion of other oil-producing states in the NDDC, suggesting a possible name change to accommodate these states.

In the end, a voice vote led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio overwhelmingly supported the bill, paving the way for further deliberations in the committee on special duties.

In addition to the South-South Development Commission bill, the Senate also discussed a bill to establish a Police Service Commission Training Institute, aimed at enhancing the oversight functions of the Nigerian police force.

Sponsored by Senator Abdulhamid Malam-Madari Ahmad, representing Jigawa East Senatorial district, the bill seeks to set standards for training and skills acquisition for personnel tasked with overseeing law enforcement in the country.

The passing of these bills underscores the Senate’s commitment to addressing critical issues affecting various regions and sectors in Nigeria, signaling a renewed focus on inclusive and sustainable development.
