Justice Binta Nyako Withdraws From Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial
Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has withdrawn from the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The drama that ensued in the court when Kanu quietened his lawyer, during the Tuesday’s proceedings resulted into Justice Nyako’s decision to withdraw from the case.
The IPOB leader claimed he had lost confidence in Nyako, accusing her of failing to obey Supreme Court orders.
“My lord, I have no confidence in this court any more,” Kanu declared.
In his verbal application, he requested that Justice Nyako would withdraw from his trial.
Justice Nyako, in response to Kanu’s request, stated, “I would be happy to do just that,” confirming her intention to send Kanu’s case back to the Chief Judge for reassignment.
“I hereby recuse myself and remit the case file back to the Chief Judge,” she announced.
The judge said she cannot preside over a matter where the defendant has no confidence in her.
Kanu is facing a seven- count-charge of terrorism and treason in the case which has been ongoing since 2015.
The matter awaits reassignment to a new judge.
