Two Suspected Cultists Arrested in Amassoma as Police Recover Guns, Ammunition After Deadly Cult Clash

Two suspected cultists have been arrested in Amassoma, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, after a violent clash that left one student dead and police recovered two locally made pistols and ammunition.
The Bayelsa State Police Command in a statement issued by the Police Public Relation Officer , PPRO, DSP Musa Mohammed, said the incident occurred on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at about 2:00 PM, along Kabaka Street in Amassoma.
The deceased was identified as Ebube Jonathan, a 200-Level student of Management Science at Niger Delta University, NDU, and a suspected member of the Black Axe Confraternity.
The PPRO said Jonathan was macheted and shot by yet-to-be-identified assailants and was later confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
“In a follow-up operation at about 4:00 PM the same day, operatives of the Amassoma Division arrested two men at Ending Pele in Amassoma.
‘The suspects are Godswin Adobu, 24, a 300-Level student of Fine and Applied Arts in NDU’s Faculty of Environmental Sciences, and Tarilaefa Fesingha, 21.
Police alleged the duo had mobilized to avenge the death of their gang member. During the arrest, officers recovered two locally made pistols, two live 9mm rounds, and drugs.
The Commissioner of Police, CP, Iyamah Daniel Edebor said the Command remains committed to tackling cultism and violent crime in the state.
He warned criminal elements to “desist from unlawful activities or face the full weight of the law,” and urged residents to provide timely information to help rid Bayelsa of criminality.
