Kubwa Express Dutse/ Bwari Express way, and some bustling suburb of the Federal Capital Territory, was brought to a near standstill today as security operatives intensified stop-and-search operations in response to the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanu protest. The heavy security presence and impromptu roadblocks caused significant disruptions in the areas, with residents forced to stay indoors for safety and mobility reasons.
By early morning, reports surfaced of long queues of vehicles trapped in gridlock, as law enforcement personnel conducted thorough checks on commuters and vehicles suspected of being connected to the protests.
The operation, aimed at curbing potential unrest, has inadvertently paralyzed movement in the area.
“This morning, I couldn’t even get out of my street,” said Joy Obi, a resident and businesswoman in Dutse. “Every junction was manned by armed officers, and the tension was just too much. I had to cancel all my plans and stay at home.”
The protest part of a wider nationwide movement calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has gained momentum across FCT, sparking security alerts in the capital city and its outskirts. While the protest in Dutse Makaranta remained largely peaceful, the heightened security response reflects government concerns over possible escalation.
Many local businesses were shuttered, and schools in the area recorded low attendance as both parents and school operators opted for caution. Public transportation was sparse, with many drivers avoiding routes where police checkpoints were reportedly aggressive in their search protocols.
“This kind of environment isn’t safe for anyone commuters, traders, or even students,” said Mr. Ibrahim Yusuf, a teacher at a nearby school. “The whole place feels like a security zone, not a residential community.”
