SIU probes as Toronto police officer shoots Mercedes driver dead
A man was on Thursday, shot dead by a Toronto police officer in Mississauga, Ontario, after a police operation involving five unmarked vehicles, with the province’s Special Investigations Unit now probing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The fatal shooting occurred shortly before 12:30am on August 6, 2026, after Toronto police officers tracked a Mercedes to Delelfi Road in Mississauga.
The operation took a deadly turn when three of the five unmarked police vehicles collided with the Mercedes, which had four occupants.
Following the collision, one of the officers opened fire, hitting the driver of the Mercedes.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
One police officer also sustained minor injuries during the incident and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The circumstances surrounding the operation, however, have become the subject of further scrutiny after police clarified information initially provided about the Mercedes.
Toronto Police Service clarified that the Mercedes was not actually reported stolen.
Instead, police said the occupants were linked to a separate investigation involving a report of a “person with a gun.”
Three other occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody following the incident.
Two firearms were also recovered near the scene, according to information released on the incident.
The Ontario Special Investigations Unit, which investigates incidents involving police officers where a person is killed or seriously injured, has since invoked its mandate to probe the shooting.
The independent agency is expected to examine the events leading to the confrontation, the collision involving the police vehicles and the circumstances that led to the officer discharging the firearm.
The SIU will also examine available evidence and interview relevant witnesses as it seeks to establish what transpired before, during and after the shooting.
The investigation is ongoing, and the SIU has not yet made any final determination regarding the circumstances of the driver’s death.
The fatal shooting adds to growing scrutiny of police use of force, particularly where an encounter results in death and questions remain over the circumstances leading to the use of a firearm.
