Senate Approves Bill to Eradicate Violence Against Individuals
A significant bill aimed at repealing and re-enacting the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Bill 2024 has successfully passed its Second Reading on the Senate floor.
The proposed bill is aimed at eradicating all forms of violence against individuals, providing optimal protection and effective remedies for victims, and ensuring appropriate punishment for offenders.
During the debate, the bill’s sponsor, Senator Isah Jibrin, expressed that the existing legislation contains provisions that hinder the realization of its goals, including inadequate provisions for compensating victims of violence.
Following thorough deliberations, the bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Human Rights and Legal Matters for further review, with a mandate to report back within six weeks.
Furthermore, a proposed Bill seeking to establish the Chartered Out of Home Media Practitioners of Nigeria also advanced to its Second Reading during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the bill’s sponsor, emphasized that the legislation aims to establish a regulatory body to supervise digital displays in the country and enhance professionalism in the sector. The bill was subsequently referred to the Senate Committees on Establishment and Public Service Matters, Information and Media, and Publicity for review with a deadline of six weeks for a report.
In other Senate news, Dr. Matthew Olumide’s nomination for the position of Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) was confirmed by the Senate.
