Police arrest four suspected drug users, recover firearms in Akwa Ibom raids
Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have recorded a significant breakthrough, arresting four suspected drug users and recovering firearms during targeted night raids in Eket and Okopedi.
Acting on credible intelligence, operatives under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, launched a targeted operation on Friday evening, swooping on a notorious hotspot in Okopedi at about 7:45 p.m.
Four male suspects; Paul Sunday, Nelson Ekpa, Akaninyene Valentine, and Idongesit Harrison, were apprehended at the scene.
Police sources disclosed that the suspects were caught with items linked to illicit drug use, including multiple empty Squadron bottles and quantities of crystal meth, popularly known as “ice.”
In a separate but swift follow-up operation at Abia Uduk Street in Ikot Ebok, officers responded to reports of suspicious movements in the area. On sighting the police, several suspected hoodlums reportedly fled, abandoning incriminating evidence.
A yellow nylon bag discarded during the escape was recovered and found to contain two locally made pistols and two live cartridges, raising fresh concerns over the circulation of illegal firearms in the area.
Police authorities described the twin operations as a clear demonstration of their renewed resolve to dismantle criminal networks and rid the state of illicit drugs and weapons.
“The Command remains steadfast in its mission to ensure the safety of lives and property,” a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said, adding that investigations are ongoing.
The arrested suspects are currently in custody and are expected to face prosecution upon conclusion of investigations.
Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information, as the Command intensifies efforts to flush out criminal elements across Akwa Ibom.
The latest raids underscore growing momentum in the state’s fight against crime, as law enforcement agencies tighten the noose on drug abuse and illegal arms proliferation.
