Senate Proposes Upgrade of Oloibiri Airstrip to Air Force Base to Boost Development in Bayelsa
The Nigerian Senate has recently put forth a proposal to revamp the abandoned Shell Airstrip at Oloibiri oil well one, located in Bayelsa, with the intention to transform it into a modern Air Force Base. This decision came after Senator Benson Agadaga, representing Bayelsa East, highlighted the dire need to utilize the vacant land and breathe new life into the area.
The Shell Airstrip, which was established in 1958 covering more than 25 hectares of land, was built following the discovery of crude oil in 1956. Over time, as Shell gradually reduced its operations in the area and eventually departed from the Oloibiri oil field, the airstrip was left abandoned, leading to a state of desolation in the region.
During discussions in the Senate, lawmakers expressed their concerns about the neglect of the airstrip and its surroundings, emphasizing the importance of redeveloping the land to create a valuable asset for the community.
