Borno Suicide Attacks: Lawmakers Demand Improved Military Strategy, Accountability
Amidst growing concern over the deteriorating security landscape in Nigeria, the National Assembly convened on Wednesday to address the shocking suicide bombing attacks that ravaged Gwoza town, Borno State. Lawmakers at the red chamber were filled with dismay and outrage as they reflected on the tragic events of Saturday, June 29th, 2024, which left a devastating impact on the nation.
The deliberations at the plenary session lasted for several hours, showcasing a deep sense of urgency and seriousness among the lawmakers. A motion moved by Senator Ali Ndume on the suicide attacks in Gwoza, Borno State, sparked heated discussions, with legislators strongly condemning the loss of lives and the collapse of the country’s security system.
During the debates, senators pointed fingers at the failure of intelligence on the part of security forces as a major factor contributing to the recent wave of violence in the country. They emphasized the need for a strategic shift in the approach to combating insecurity, calling for the deployment of modern technology and scientific tactics to counter the threats posed by terrorist groups like Boko Haram.
Senator Ndume’s call for the military to intensify efforts in addressing the security challenges in Borno State was met with resounding support from his colleagues. Acknowledging the efforts of the security forces in reducing cases of terrorism in the state, lawmakers urged for a re-evaluation of the conventional methods used in fighting insurgency, emphasizing the importance of innovation and efficiency in the battle against crime.
Former Governor of Edo State, Sen. Adams Oshiomhole, added fuel to the discussions by raising allegations of fund diversion by former service chiefs, accusing them of misappropriating resources intended for security equipment. While his concerns highlighted the need for transparency and accountability in the handling of security funds, a proposal to prevent Service Chiefs from diverting funds was eventually rejected by the Senate.
In a show of solidarity and empathy towards the victims of the tragic suicide attacks in Gwoza, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, expressed heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Borno State. The Senate further directed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to act swiftly in providing relief materials and medical support to the victims, underscoring the urgent need for a coordinated national emergency response.
