‘Closed-door meeting’ with Kwankwaso, blatant lie – Fayemi
Former Ekiti State Governor and immediate past Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has dismissed as false a social media report alleging that he held a closed-door meeting with ex-Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his Abuja residence.
The claim, which circulated on X (formerly Twitter) via handles such as June 12 Movement and ADC Vanguard, was accompanied by an old video clip showing Fayemi exchanging greetings with Kwankwaso at his residence.
This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by Head of the Fayemi Media Office, Mallam Ahmad Sajoh.
Fayemi described the report as a “blatant lie” and urged members of the public to disregard it.
According to the statement, the former governor has met Senator Kwankwaso only once in the last one year, and that was during the public book launch of a former Attorney-General of the Federation, Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN).
“At no time has Dr Fayemi held, or is he holding, any closed-door political meeting with Senator Kwankwaso as suggested by the post,” the statement said.
Fayemi acknowledged that he and Kwankwaso have been friends since their days as governors but stressed that their relationship is personal and non-partisan.
He explained that the friendship is founded on mutual respect and a shared commitment to Nigeria’s progress, rather than on political alignment.
He also cautioned political actors against reading partisan meanings into private relationships, noting that many of his friends and associates are either not involved in partisan politics or belong to different political persuasions.
The former governor added that his circle of friends spans across Nigeria’s entire political spectrum, warning against attempts to drag private relationships into political narratives.
The Fayemi Media Office reaffirmed his commitment to national unity, principled engagement and responsible public discourse.
